What to Clear Before Closing a Brokerage Account

You may have stopped trading, yet your account can still contain obligations that need attention. Closing a brokerage account involves more than leaving its cash balance at zero. We recommend reviewing outstanding trades, records and payment instructions before sending a termination request. These checks identify outstanding issues and useful records.

First reconcile what is still open

Start with the latest account statement and your trading platform. Look for positions that remain open, orders awaiting execution and trades that have executed but have not settled. Those events have different statuses.

Next review commissions, financing charges and any margin requirement still applying to the account. Foreign-currency balances may need separate attention. Unsettled items can change the available balance.

If you cannot confirm a transaction's status, ask us for the current record before submitting new instructions. A zero cash balance alone does not establish that every position or obligation has ended.

Gather the records you may need later

Download the records you can currently access while the account remains active. They may help with later enquiries or reporting. Prioritise:

  • account statements covering the periods relevant to your trading;
  • trade confirmations and records of commissions or other charges;
  • currency-conversion details and any transaction references;
  • copies of your correspondence about account verification or unresolved entries.

Keep these records in a secure location. Closure does not automatically mean that we can delete information subject to legal or regulatory retention requirements. Keep originals when necessary.

Submit the right termination instruction

Our Client Agreement includes a termination and notices section. Check the version governing your account and confirm the permitted communication method with us. Your applicable agreement governs the notice.

A practical request should identify the account, state that you wish to terminate the relationship and ask us to confirm any remaining steps. Use your verified contact details and request instructions for dealing with any open items. Never send passwords or full banking credentials in an ordinary message.

Before transmitting the request, review these questions. They distinguish closure from withdrawal:

  1. Have pending orders and open positions been addressed?
  2. Are settlement items and outstanding charges clear?
  3. Have we confirmed the appropriate notice channel?
  4. Do we have the verified details needed to discuss the remaining balance?

Keep a copy of the instruction and our response. If any point remains unresolved, clarify it before assuming the process is complete.

What happens between closing and receiving funds

A trade execution does not immediately complete settlement. Account reconciliation follows settlement. Withdrawal processing and your receiving bank's crediting process are separate steps.

Once the account is ready for closure, we can discuss arrangements for the remaining withdrawal. The amount available may depend on unsettled trades, margin obligations or applicable charges. We will need to confirm the actual payment instructions and conditions for your account.

Regulated firms have client-money safeguarding obligations, but these rules do not make every balance instantly withdrawable or eliminate every counterparty risk. Bank verification may delay receipt. We cannot promise a universal transfer date.

If something does not match your statement

Give our team the account reference, relevant trade or payment identifier, date, currency and disputed amount. Explain the difference you see and retain the supporting statement. Ask for a written explanation of any correction or outstanding liability. If our figures differ from yours, ask which entry caused the difference before confirming the final balance.

If a complaint remains unresolved, the formal complaints process explains available next steps and the role of the Financial Ombudsman Service where eligible. The available route depends on the circumstances.

Confirm both the account's final status and the receipt of any remaining funds. Check both outcomes.
